Passing It On: Why Youth Turkey Season Hits Different

There’s something about youth turkey season that feels different from any other day in the woods.  Maybe it’s the slower pace. Maybe it’s the extra snacks stuffed in a vest. Or maybe it’s the quiet realization that this hunt isn’t really about the bird at all.  It’s about them.

The Morning Feels Bigger

The alarm goes off earlier than it should.
Boots are a little too big.
Zippers are loud. EVERYTHING is loud.

And yet… none of it matters.

Because when that first gobble echoes through the timber, you don’t just hear it  you feel it. And when you glance over and see their eyes light up for the very first time…

That’s the moment.

Taking a kid turkey hunting isn’t about filling a tag. It’s about lighting a fire.

Teaching More Than Hunting

Youth hunts aren’t about perfection  they’re about patience. You’re teaching them:

  • How to sit still when everything in them wants to move
  • How to truly listen to — the woods, not just the call
  • How to respect the animal and the land
  • How to handle failure and still love the experience

And maybe most importantly... how to be present in a world that's always pushing them forward.

Success Looks Different

Sometimes a bird comes in on a string.
Sometimes they hang up just out of range.
Sometimes you don’t see a thing at all.

But success isn’t always measured in feathers.

It’s the grin when they hear their first gobble.
The wide eyes when a hen slips in quietly.
The whispered “Did you see that?” like it’s the biggest moment in the world.

Because to them  it is.

And when it all comes together… when a longbeard commits…

There’s nothing like it.

The shaking hands.
The racing heartbeat.
The moment they pull the trigger.

Then pure joy  sometimes even tears.
Not just because they got a turkey, but because they were part of something real.
Something earned.

A Hunt I’ll Never Forget

A few years ago, I had the chance to guide a 10-year-old girl on her first turkey hunt in Iowa.

She was fidgety, nervous, and full of questions. We set up on bird after bird that morning, but every time something went wrong—she’d move at the wrong moment, shift her gun, or try to whisper. The birds were there… we just couldn’t quite pull it together.

That evening, we decided to give it one more try.

We struck a gobble and made a plan. My husband looked at me and said, “Put her between your legs.” I gave him a confused look but trusted him anyway.

I sat against a tree and tucked her tightly between my legs. Suddenly, everything changed. I could keep her still, quietly guide her, and see exactly what she was seeing—right down the barrel.

A few soft calls later, that gobbler came into view.

I whispered, “Shoot.”

Nothing.

A little louder this time, “SHOOT.”

Her nerves took her over. “I can’t,” she whimpered.

And thenBOOM!!

She dropped him!!

The woods erupted with excitement. Hooting, hollering, pure adrenaline from all of us. And then came the emotion. She cried. I cried. She immediately called her parents, telling them every detail as if they had been right there beside us.

That feeling… it’s hard to put into words. I was more excited in that moment than I had ever been pulling the trigger myself.

It’s a hunt I’ll carry with me forever.

More Than a Hunt

Years from now, they won’t remember every detail.

But they’ll remember:

  • Who took them
  • How it felt
  • The stories they couldn’t wait to tell
  • The confidence they gained
  • The connection — to you, to the outdoors, to something bigger

They’ll remember being included. Trusted. Taught

And chances are… they’ll want to pass it on.
Because this was never just about a turkey.
It’s about lighting a fire, building a lifelong hunter, and passing down something that matters.

For her first hunt… and every one after.

And if you’re looking to outfit that young lady for the woods, DSG Outerwear has her in mind.

Our sizing starts at XXS — which we’ve found fits many 10–12 year olds — and is designed specifically for a woman’s (and growing girl’s) fit, not just downsized men’s gear.

With adjustable inseams, waists, and cuffs, our pieces are made to grow with her — so you’re not replacing gear every season. It’s durable, dependable, and built to handle everything from early morning sits to full days in the field.

Because when she’s comfortable and confident, she’s free to focus on what really matters — making memories that will last a lifetime.
