Cast Beyond Home: Planning Your Next Out-of-State Fishing Adventure

Fishing and travel go hand in hand for me—from Alaska's Kenai River to Florida's surf to Wisconsin's lakes. Here are the travel-fishing tips I've picked up along the way.

For me, fishing and traveling have always gone hand in hand. Anytime I'm planning a vacation, one of the first things I look up isn't the restaurants or attractions—it's where I can fish.

Over the years, that passion has taken me to some incredible places. I've fished the world-famous Kenai River and the Pacific waters off Homer, Alaska, cast into the surf along Florida's beaches, and explored countless lakes and rivers in neighboring Wisconsin. Every destination has taught me something different, but they've all reminded me of one thing: a little planning makes every fishing adventure more enjoyable.

If you're thinking about exploring new waters, here are a few tips I've learned along the way.

Buy Your Fishing License Before You Go

Living in Minnesota, I'm spoiled with incredible fishing opportunities. Between the Land of 10,000 Lakes and the Mississippi River practically in my backyard, there's never a shortage of places to cast a line.

But sometimes the best adventures happen outside your home state.

Wisconsin is my easiest getaway. I can see the bluffs across the river from my house and be across state lines in just a few minutes. Since I fish there often with family and friends, buying an annual Wisconsin fishing license is an easy decision.

For bigger trips like Alaska or Florida, I usually purchase a three-day or week-long license depending on how much time I'll spend on the water.

No matter where you're headed, make purchasing your fishing license one of the first things you check off your list. Most states make it quick and easy to buy online before your trip.

Pack Smart for the Adventure

No two fishing trips are the same, so your gear shouldn't be either. Whether you're surf fishing in Florida, wading through Alaska's rivers, or spending the day on frozen lakes in Wisconsin, being prepared means you can focus on fishing instead of worrying about what you forgot.

Dress for Changing Conditions

Weather has a way of keeping anglers on their toes.

I've learned that dressing in layers is one of the smartest things you can do, especially when you're traveling. Early mornings can be chilly, afternoons can be hot, and unexpected rain showers are always a possibility.

That's why my suitcase almost always includes my favorite DSG Outerwear essentials—an SPF performance shirt for long days under the sun, comfortable active leggings for hiking or launching the boat, a hat for extra sun protection, and dependable rain gear that keeps me fishing when the weather doesn't cooperate.

Being comfortable means I can stay on the water longer and enjoy every minute of the adventure.

Rods and Reels

Before you pack your tackle, think about the type of fishing you'll be doing.

If you've booked a guide or charter, they'll often provide the rods, reels, bait, and even specialty equipment you'll need. When I fished Alaska's Kenai River, my guide even supplied waders, making travel much easier.

If you're fishing on your own, make sure your rods are protected during travel. A quality rod case or a two-piece travel rod is worth the investment and helps keep your gear safe on the road or in the airport.

Don't Forget the Snacks

Whether you're heading out for a day trip or spending a week at a cabin, pack plenty of water and your favorite snacks.

Long days on the water are always better when everyone stays fueled—and nobody enjoys fishing with a hangry angler!

Choose the Right Place to Stay

Where you stay can make just as much of a difference as where you fish.

Before booking your hotel, cabin, or campground, look at how close you'll be to boat launches, fishing access, guide services, restaurants, and any other activities you want to enjoy.

When we traveled to Alaska, we stayed in Soldotna, where we could walk right from our hotel to the Kenai River. That meant more time fishing and less time driving.

Many resorts also offer kayak rentals, boat rentals, or guided fishing packages, so it's worth doing a little research before booking your stay.

Get to Know the Locals

One of my favorite parts of traveling is meeting people who call these places home.

Local anglers often know the best fishing spots, the most productive techniques, and even where to grab a great meal after a long day on the water. Taking the time to chat with them has led to some of my favorite memories and some of my best fishing advice.

Remember that you're a guest in their community. Support local businesses, treat the water with respect, and always clean up after yourself. Leaving every place better than you found it helps preserve these amazing fisheries for everyone who visits after you.

Make the Most of Every Adventure

Some of my favorite fishing memories didn't happen close to home—they happened because I decided to explore somewhere new.

Whether you're planning a family vacation, a girls' getaway, or a solo adventure, don't be afraid to fish unfamiliar waters. With a little preparation, the right gear, and an adventurous spirit, you'll create memories that last far longer than the trip itself.

So pack your rods, grab your favorite DSG Outerwear layers, and start planning your next adventure. You never know what memories—or what fish—are waiting just beyond your home waters.
