What It Means to Be a Woman in the Outdoors

Women are redefining the outdoors—breaking barriers, building confidence, and creating communities that inspire adventure and growth.

For generations, outdoor spaces have been shaped by resilience, exploration, and the drive to push beyond boundaries. For women, especially in traditionally male-dominated sports, the outdoors isn’t just about recreation—it’s about claiming space, building confidence, and forging communities that lift each other higher.

At DSG Outerwear, we’ve seen first-hand how women are changing the narrative of outdoor adventure. They’re not just participating; they’re leading, innovating, and inspiring others to join them. For our ambassadors, the outdoors is more than a place to spend time—it’s a place to grow.

Finding Peace and Purpose in Nature

“I have always been a woman in a man’s industry with my career and hobbies,” says Tawney Clum, a member of the DSG Outerwear fishing team. “Being in nature is my peace and helps me center and ground myself. Fishing gives me my own sense of worth and accomplishment, which I enjoy sharing with others as much as I can!”

Tawney’s story is one so many women can relate to—using the outdoors not only as a personal escape but as a space to connect with others and build shared experiences.

Empowerment in the Backcountry

For Kadie Jay McCallum, the backcountry snowmobiling world has been a life-changing teacher. “My relationship with the outdoors has been nothing short of empowering. Riding through deep snow, climbing steep terrain, and navigating remote wilderness has pushed me far outside my comfort zone—and that’s exactly where I’ve grown the most. Snowmobiling has taught me to trust my instincts, believe in my strength, and handle tough conditions with confidence and grit.”

Kadie’s journey also reflects the independence that comes with learning to navigate these spaces on your own. “You learn quickly how to read terrain, troubleshoot your sled, and make decisions that keep you safe and moving forward. There’s a unique pride that comes from knowing you can hold your own in challenging environments—not just as a rider, but as a woman.”

And while personal growth is powerful, Kadie also celebrates the community: “There’s something powerful about connecting with other women who ride. We lift each other up, share knowledge, and build a network based on mutual respect and a shared love for the backcountry. Snowmobiling isn’t just a sport—it’s a space where I’ve found confidence, resilience, and a sisterhood that inspires me to keep pushing.”

Breaking Barriers with the Right Gear

When Amy Gregorio first started snowmobiling over 20 years ago, she found herself battling a barrier many women know too well—gear that simply didn’t fit or function for them. “Snowmobiling has traditionally been male-dominated, and that was reflected in the gear available—there was little consideration for women's comfort, fit, or function.”

That all changed when she discovered DSG Outerwear. “For the first time, I found a brand that truly understood the needs of female riders. Their gear checked every box: it fit well, functioned beautifully, and looked great too. As a plus-sized rider, having gear designed with my body in mind has completely transformed my riding experience.”

For Amy, the right gear didn’t just make riding more comfortable—it opened doors to more connection and adventure. “I can now spend full days on the trails feeling confident, comfortable, and warm. This renewed comfort and confidence has opened so many doors. I've been fortunate to meet incredible people across Canada and the U.S. through the snowmobile community.”

A Collective Movement

These stories highlight something that goes far beyond personal achievement—it’s about redefining what it means to be a woman in the outdoors. It’s about showing up, challenging stereotypes, and supporting one another along the way.

From the water to the snow, from early morning fishing trips to remote mountain rides, women are making their mark. They’re proving that the outdoors belongs to everyone—and that with the right mindset, community, and gear, there’s no limit to what they can accomplish.

Here’s to the women who cast farther, ride harder, and climb higher—because the outdoors is better with you in it.
